Getting started with beginners meditation

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

The term “meditate” comes from the Latin word “meditatum” which means to ponder and in beginners meditation, that is one of  the main avenues to take in order to obtain success.  Having a sound and well disciplined mind is necessary in order for you to “ponder” your way to enlightenment and inner peace.  Having the ability to isolate yourself and veer yourself away from external variables that may make the entire mental enterprise futile.  How to do just that is what follows in the course of this article.

1. Determine an ideal meditation place
Be one with your mind, be one with your body, be one with your surroundings. In beginners meditation, it is important that you give yourself access to the aforementioned elements.  So you need to find a place where you can be at peace with your mind, physical self and nature.  Make sure that no one can disrupt the process of your practice to attain inner peace.

2. Maintain proper posture
Beginners meditation is geared for a level of relaxation that can make many people fall fast asleep instead of actually meditating, especially those early morning meditation sessions.  As such, it is important that you are well-aware of the appropriate body position.  Always aim to have a straight back while meditating.  Refrain from lying down so you can focus on meditating.

Now that we are into the topic…

3. Do not meditate when sleepy
In beginners meditation, one of the primary goals is to attain a clear mind which comes with an elating and calm sensation.  This state of relaxation more often than not leads elsewhere, that is, to a state of nap time relaxation.  That being said, it is highly recommended that you embark on your beginners meditation sessions with your senses fully active and alert.  This will help your meditation be more successful.

4. Maintain steady breathing pattern
An integral part of beginners meditation is regulated breathing. Maintaining a rhythmic breathing pattern heightens the chance of success of your meditation process. Rhythmic breathing elevates the relaxation level and in turn contributes to attaining your goals in meditating.

5. Focus on a singular thought or object.
One of the many reasons why people undertake beginners meditation is to gain greater focus of the mind and their thoughts as well as inner peace.  Channeling all your mental processes into a single thought or object, such as a mantra or mandala will help you meditate more successfully.  It leads to a more focused mind which in turn leads to a more aware and relaxed state, while at the same time gives you more power to focus and control your mind outside of your meditation practice in everyday life.
